The workshops at this year’s Fashion and Embroidery show at the NEC were as popular as ever with only the snow on the final day slowing numbers a little for the early morning class.
My hand stitch classes were about embracing your inner Wabi Sabi and making collaged and stitched pictures. As well the fun of a new creative pastime, these students also got some textile history, a bit of art therapy and some life coaching all at the same time! Everyone went away with their comfort zone expanded and some new ideas, especially about when to wear their ballgowns!
The machine stitch classes looked at natural rockpools using my rust dyed and cyanotype fabrics in conjunction with a selection of Madeira’s threads. Students learned how to layout, sketch with the machine, shade, fill and then highlight with sparkle. Many of them had never even attempted freemotion embroidery before and everyone did really well.
The threads used were Cotona grey variegated no. 50 col 514 , Frosted matt brown col. 7957, heavy metal gold smooth no. 30 col. 6037, metallic sparkly silver no. 40 col. 41.
If you missed out then why not join me at Excel for more Wabi Sabi collage pictures from 19th-21st April or try your hand at paper cut cards/artwork with Jay.
